Smart Systems
Can escalators adjust their speed to passenger demand?
A suitably designed escalator can detect approaching passengers, leave standby operation and transition safely to service speed.

Passenger detection and variable-speed operation
Sensors at the entrance can signal the controller when a passenger approaches. Depending on design, the escalator may start from rest or move from a reduced standby speed to its normal service speed.
Safe acceleration and timing
Detection distance, direction, acceleration profile and safety circuits must ensure that service speed is reached in the intended way before the passenger enters the step band.
Energy performance depends on use
Savings vary with empty time, traffic pattern, motor and drive efficiency, control settings and maintenance condition. A single percentage cannot describe every site.
Modernizing an existing escalator
A conversion may be possible only after motor, drive, controller, braking and safety compatibility are assessed. Changes must preserve all applicable safety functions.
Frequently asked questions
Can an escalator start when someone approaches?
Yes, if it was designed and configured for passenger detection and safe automatic transition to service speed.
Does slower movement always indicate a fault?
No. A variable-speed system may use standby speed when empty. Irregular movement or unexpected changes with passengers require service.
Can smart speed control be added to an existing unit?
Sometimes, but only after compatibility of motor, drive, control and safety circuits is technically assessed.
