Everyday Questions

What happens to an elevator during a power outage?

A loss of power normally causes the elevator to stop in a controlled manner. Passenger actions and rescue behavior depend on the system installed.

A power outage does not mean the car will fall

When the supply is interrupted, the drive stops and the elevator's safety systems keep the car controlled. Some installations include an automatic rescue device that can take the car to a nearby floor and open the doors; others require trained intervention.

If you are inside the car

Stay calm and use the alarm, intercom or emergency communication system. Share the building location, number of passengers and any medical or fire-related concern. The car is ventilated; do not force the doors out of fear of running out of air.

Do not force the doors

The car may be between floors. Opening the doors or trying to leave through a gap can create a serious fall or entrapment risk. Wait for instructions from authorized personnel.

After power returns

If the elevator returns to normal operation without warnings, it may resume service. If there is unusual noise, vibration, an error display or abnormal door movement, keep it out of use and request a technical check.

Frequently asked questions

Will an elevator fall when the power fails?

No. In normal operating condition, safety components hold and stop the car in a controlled manner. A power outage alone does not mean that the car will fall.

Will the air run out inside the car?

No. Elevator cars are not airtight. Stay calm, use emergency communication and wait for trained help.

Will the doors open automatically?

It depends on the rescue equipment and car position. Some systems move to a nearby landing automatically; others require authorized intervention.
