Escalator Maintenance

What is checked during escalator maintenance?

Escalator maintenance follows the full passenger path—from entrance and steps to drive, brake and safety systems.

Maintenance starts at the entrance and continues inside the system

The appropriate plan reflects manufacturer instructions, operating hours, traffic, environment, age and service history. Cleaning and technical maintenance are complementary, not interchangeable.

Entrance, comb plates and steps

Comb condition, clearances, step surfaces, skirt areas and entry zones are checked for damage, debris and abnormal contact that could affect passenger safety.

Handrail, drive and brake

Handrail movement and tension should coordinate with step travel. Drive, chain, brake and lubrication points are evaluated according to the equipment procedure.

Safety devices and operating behavior

Emergency stops, switches, sensors, control circuits, lighting, direction indicators, noise and vibration are reviewed. Findings and completed actions should be recorded.

Frequently asked questions

How often should an escalator be maintained?

There is no single interval for every installation. Manufacturer guidance, operating time, traffic, environment, age and history shape the plan.

Is a visible handrail speed difference normal?

A difference that affects passenger balance should be assessed by a technician; handrail drive and tension may require attention.

Does cleaning replace maintenance?

No. Cleaning reduces debris, but it does not replace technical checks of drive, brake, electrical and safety systems.
