Everyday Use

Why won’t an elevator door close?

An open door can have a simple visible cause or a technical one. Safe observation is useful; intervention belongs to trained personnel.

Elevator door unable to close because of debris in the sill

Start with the doorway—not the mechanism

First make sure no passenger, bag or other object is in the opening. If there is no visible obstruction and the door remains open or cycles repeatedly, stop using the elevator and report it.

Sensor obstruction or contamination

An interrupted or dirty beam can make the controller think the doorway is occupied. The same symptom can also come from sensor alignment or wiring, so recurring behavior requires a technical check.

Debris in the sill

Small stones, paper, metal fragments or heavy dirt in the threshold channel can restrict movement. Only remove clearly visible loose debris without touching the mechanism.

Mechanical or control fault

Worn rollers, misalignment, door-operator problems, locks or control signals can prevent normal closing. Do not push or pull automatic door panels; call service.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do when the door stays open?

Check the opening for a visible obstruction. If none is present, do not force the door; stop use and contact building management or service.

Can a small object in the track prevent closing?

Yes. Debris in the sill can affect movement, but users should not reach into or dismantle the mechanism.

Should I close the door by hand?

No. Pushing or pulling automatic panels can damage the system and create a trapping hazard.
